It's almost as though M. Hopper wants her to think well of him, which both amuses and bemuses. Who cares, indeed, what her opinion is? But since she does, it's not a gesture that goes missed. Whether it plays into a good impression or not has yet to be determined, but she's overwhelmed in a good way at how unflappable he seems by another teenager showing up at his door. And he just goes ahead to make her food.

She's glad when Beverly teases back, as she'd been completely sarcastic. "I know I'll never get tired of it," she drawls and grins, following her to the couch. "New ones every day, too. Were you there when Cosette arrived? I can't remember."
"Do you have cake all the time?" she whispers, an aside, to Beverly, grinning. "No wonder you moved in here. I'm going to camp out."
