Still, even now, Beverly never sleeps well. Some nights are, of course, better than others, but always the nightmares come, sometimes vivid, sometimes hazy, usually waking her at least once. This past night has been a bit less fitful than she's used to, but she still winds up awake well before her alarm, staring at the ceiling for a good long while. Eventually, she decides there's no sense in trying to go back to sleep, and she's just considering putting on a sweater and going outside to smoke a cigarette when she hears the distinct sound of a knock at her window.
It startles her, but it doesn't worry her. Only so many people would know that this is her window, specifically, and fewer still would show up there rather than just calling or texting her. With a yawn, she pulls herself out of bed, the hem of her loose t-shirt falling to her hips, and rubs her eyes as she makes her way over to the curtain to pull it open.
Seeing Eponine there isn't a surprise. Maybe, given the unexpectedness of the situation, the look on her face isn't wholly surprising either, but it still makes Beverly's stomach twist all the same. Something is wrong. She doesn't know what, but she's certain of that much.
Without a second thought, she lifts the glass of the window, stepping aside to let Eponine in. "Hey," she says, her voice quiet, if still a little rough from sleep. "What happened?"
