It was the end of the year at school, only four more days to go, which was hardly any time at all really. All the tests were done; all the events over with. Most classes were just showing movies, and although Eponine had rarely seen moving pictures, except for time to time in the Children's Home common rooms -- and even then they had to be deemed appropriate for anyone who might be in the room -- even she was tiring of the ridiculous plots that seemed to play out on the small screens allotted to the classrooms of Darrow High.
It was far too much time that could be spent doing better things. If she slipped school, she could go to the beach, or go shopping, or -- she thought warmly -- spend time with her boyfriend. It was still such a novel idea, being someone's girlfriend; the sort of title to inspire foolish butterflies. In fact, it seemed altogether ridiculous if she stopped and thought about it too hard, and so she didn't. After all, she deserved some good things.
Instead, while the TV plays something about a group of poor children who play some game involving a frozen lake and sticks that she can't quite make heads or tails of, and what seems to be a very wealthy man who drinks too much, she sends a message off to Nicaise.
This movie is terrible. I miss you! Meet me outside after school? xx
After school, she looks around for him in the throng of children streaming out the doors, smiling.

He read it twice.
She...missed him?
Sure, he texted back, hiding his phone under his desk so his teacher wouldn't take it.
After school he found Eponine right by the stairs and went over to her with a smile. "What movie was it?" he asked in greeting. They'd been watching them in his classes too and some of them were hard to stay awake through.

She shrugs. "If they're going to teach us nothing, they ought to just let us out, don't you think? So much nicer things we could be doing."

"I'd rather go to the library than watch a movie they've chosen," he agreed. The school movies were usually boring.

She did, she knew, have a bit of a reputation as an outcast -- scary, or strange, or stupid sometimes, it depended on who was telling it -- but he knew that. Perhaps he was tiring of it, but it seemed so out of nowhere.
"Well, school's out and we're free of their choices," she replies, continuing on as though everything is fine, for perhaps she's overreading it. "Where would you like to go now?"

"Did you want to do something with me?" he asked instead, because he wouldn't mind it. He liked Eponine alright, and the apartment was always quiet these days.

She's sure they were supposed to spend time together today. It didn't seem at all strange for her to want to, at least. Was it? If he didn't want to, he could have said so. Nicaise was acting so strange. Almost confused.

He hadn't asked her. He didn't remember her asking him. Had he fallen asleep during class?
"When did you become my girlfriend?"
